Mbop Music News: Kasabian showered the audience with severed limbs at the NME awards last night

The band were joined on stage by Mighty Boosh comedian Noel Fielding who assumed the role of bloodthirsty Romanian ruler Vlad The Impaler, the inspiration for fictional vampire Dracula and the title of the song the group performed.

As the group played Fielding threw the bloody prop limbs into the star-studded crowd, which included Courtney Love, Paul Weller, Damon Albarn and Lily Allen, at London’s 02 Brixton Academy.

Kasabian went on to win two awards – Best Album and Best Album Artwork for their last effort ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’.

Singer Tom Meighan recently revealed the band’s attitude to winning awards.

He told BANG Showbiz: “We give a s**t, because it’s a big thing and we like that, we like the buzz of it. We give it a go and see what happens. But if we don’t win I’m not going to fret about it.”

Other winners on the night included Arctic Monkeys, who took home Best Live Band, Muse, who were named Best British Band and were handed the accolade for Best Website, and The Big Pink, who took home Best Track for their single ‘Dominoes’.

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy was later joined on stage by The Big Pink’s Robbie Furze for a surprise performance.

Ska legends The Specials were given the Outstanding  Contribution to Music trophy, while Weller was named Godlike Genius.

Upon accepting his trophy from Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie and The Clash’s Mick Jones, Weller said: “What could I say, it’s taken them 30 years! I’m embarrassed because people said so many nice things about me… but they’re all true! God bless you, have a good night.”

He then played a set to close the ceremony, including The Jam songs ‘Eton Rifles’ and ‘A Town Called Malice’.

The Shockwaves NME Awards 2010 were presented by Jarvis Cocker.

Mbop Music News: Lady Gaga has reportedly been billed more than £100,000 by BRIT Awards organisers.

The 23-year-old singer, who is well known for her elaborate stage shows - including covering herself in fake blood and performing on a piano on stilts – has infuriated organisers of tonight’s (16.02.10) ceremony so much with her constant changes they have also moved her performance time from the coveted prime time 9pm slot.

A source said: “Lady Gaga wanted her stage show to be as big and as theatrical as her Grammys one, an idea which the Brits bosses loved.

“The plan was for a London-themed backdrop with models of all the major monuments. Gaga would arrive onstage on a pimped-up green Rolls-Royce and sing ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Telephone’.

“But the Rolls-Royce is now gathering dust backstage after she changed her mind and ditched the plans.”

Gaga wanted to change her set in favour of a tribute to British fashion designer Alexander McQueen – who committed suicide last week - but she has been urged not to do so for fear of it looking “crass”.

The source added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Her aides persuaded her that it would appear crass. So on Monday morning she changed everything yet again and promised to stump up the bill for the new stage which is easily in the £100,000s.”

Meanwhile, British rock band Kasabian have been banned by organisers at the show from using real flames during their performance.

The rockers who are up for Best British Group and Best British Album at the awards, will instead have a “psychedelic” display when they perform their hit single ‘Fire’.

Lead singer Tom Meighan said: “There will be a big screen of fire, it’ll be psychedelic. I wish I could be like Indiana Jones. It would be amazing if it was real.”

Mbop Music News: The Helping Haiti single hit number one in the UK after selling 450,000 copies in its first week of release.

The track - recorded by a host of top artists including Rod Stewart, Alexandra Burke and Susan Boyle, and helmed by ‘X Factor’ mogul Simon Cowell - has become one of the biggest selling songs of the last decade already by the time it hit the top spot yesterday (14.02.10), raising a large amount of money for aid relief in the earthquake stricken state.

Alexandra Burke – who flew to Haiti to help the aid effort – said: “It’s fantastic the single is at number one and that helping Haiti is on everyone’s agenda.

“I’ve seen where this money will go and that it will really make a difference and help those who need it.

“Thank you to everyone who has bought this single.”

‘Happy’ singer Leona Lewis said that the single, a cover of R.E.M. song ‘Everybody Hurts’, selling so many copies – 453,000 according to official chart figures – was a great achievement, but encouraged people not to stop buying and downloading it.

She said: “I’m so pleased that so many people are supporting this record.

“There are still so many in Haiti that need our help so please keep giving.”

All money raised from the single will go directly to helping victims of the earthquakes, after the British government waived VAT on the single and REM said they wouldn’t collect writing royalties on the song.

Mbop Music News: Dizzee Rascal will shower the BRITs audience with “money” tomorrow (16.02.10).

The rapper will perform with Florence and the Machine on a special version of his song ‘Dirty Cash’, which will segue into Florence’s cover of ‘You Got the Love’ by Candi Staton, and the climax of the track will see them release banknotes with their faces printed on them over the audience.

The pair’s version of the song – dubbed ‘You’ve Got The Dirty Love’ - will then be available for download after the show.

Despite promising a spectacular performance, Dizzee said he is not usually a fan of putting on over-the-top stage shows.

He told The Sun newspaper: “I’ve no plan for one of those Shakespearian massive performances. It won’t be one of those Robin Hood things with lots of twirling - unless I’m drunk!

“But we do have a few tricks. One involves money, which we will shower over the audience.”

Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch added that they have had to pull together to create their performance quickly.

She added: “We’ve only had three days of rehearsals but I’d have been happy to wing it.”

Dizzee added that the performer he’s most looking forward to watching at the show tomorrow – which will see Robbie Williams, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys take to the stage, among others – is ‘Poker Face’ singer Lady Gaga.

He said: “She’s amazing at what she does and always make me gasp – the number of times I’ve said, ‘f***ing hell’ when I see her on TV. That’s what we hope to do with our performance.

“I haven’t seen no-one like her since Madonna. She wears things I couldn’t dream up. It’s going to be mad.”

Dizzee is nominated for two gongs at the BRIT awards – which take place at London’s Earl’s Court tomorrow – British Male Solo Artist and British Album, while Florence is nominated for British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act and British Album.

Mbop Music News: Ellie Goulding is unprepared for the BRIT Awards.

The hotly-tipped singer, who won the BRITS 2010 Critics Choice Award in December 2009, admits she has not had time to prepare for the event, which take place on February 16.

She said: “God, I haven’t even started getting ready for that! I haven’t got a speech, haven’t got a dress… I haven’t even had time to talk to anyone about it.

“I’m meant to be getting sorted out on Sunday, but if that doesn’t happen then it’s just straight into the wardrobe for something.

“How are you supposed to prepare for that sort of thing anyway? I’m not exactly going to go there and go, ‘Right, tonight, I will be noshing with celebrities’.”

Despite being the most critically acclaimed artist of 2010 so far, Ellie admits that her music taste in the past has not always been so stellar.

She admitted to website The Quietus: “My first record? I’m not really sure, my memory’s terrible… I think it might have been a Spice Girls tape. I think I bought everything, though – lots of dance, Simply Red’s ‘Fairground’, bit of Blur, The Verve, Supergrass, a lot of classical.”

Mbop Music News: Take That had dinner at Robbie Williams’ house further fuelling rumours they are getting back together for good.

The band – Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange - indulged in a takeaway at Robbie’s Los Angeles home after spending the day recording songs together.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “It’s just like old times. The session on Tuesday (26.01.10) went great and they are planning on getting back in the studio soon.”

Robbie, 35, spent five hours with his former bandmates in the studio this week.

An insider said: “All the signs are looking good. It’s great news for the fans. They’re using this time in Los Angeles to start working together as a band again.

“They were delighted with the session and were congratulating each other as they left. They’re using this time together to crack on with reunion songs.”

A spokesperson for the group confirmed they had been socialising with Robbie.

They said: “Take That didn’t go to Los Angeles with plans to official write or record with Robbie, but they’ve been hanging out together, which is great.”

Mbop Music News: Lady Gaga is wanted as a judge on the US version of ‘The X Factor’.

The ‘Bad Romance’ singer impressed producer-and-judge Simon Cowell when she performed in a giant bathtub on the UK version of the TV talent show last year and the music mogul is desperate for her to bring her eccentricities to the upcoming series.

A source said: “Simon thinks Lady Gaga is great and really likes her energy. Conversations have been happening between Cowell’s US team and her people about what kind of role she could have on the show.”

The 23-year-old American star is said to be checking her hectic schedule to see if it is something she could fit in, but with her relentless touring commitments it may not be possible.

Earlier this month, Simon announced he would leave ‘American Idol’ to launch the US ‘X Factor’ after sealing a $160 million deal.

Other stars being tipped for a position on the judging panel include former Spice Girl Mel B, Paula Abdul and Cheryl Cole.

Mbop Music News:

La Roux’s Elly Jackson wants to get in the studio with Heaven 17.

The ‘Bulletproof’ singer, who recently revealed that she would be teaming up with the 80s synthpop band, said that her and musical partner Ben Langmaid would love to work more with them after collaborating for BBC 6 Music.

She told the radio station: “We’d definitely be up for it. If you respect each other and like making music it’s only ever a matter of time and schedule unfortunately, which is annoying.

“For us, we’ve got to write our second record but we don’t have any time to get into the studio until August.

“We’ve got to get some time but if we have time we will definitely, definitely do something with Heaven 17. Ben would die to do something with them.

“I just wanna hang out with them as well, they’re just funny people.”

Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory added: “The least that could happen is that we should work together on one song together, because I think there’s something special going on with those voices and it would be really nice.”
